How we choose, write and check the recipes on What I Can Cook With. We want every recipe to be clear, honest and easy to cook at home.

Where recipes come from

Our recipes are everyday home recipes. They come from traditional home cooking and our own recipe research: we study how home cooks make a dish, from public cooking videos in Hindi, Bengali and English and from published home recipes. We choose dishes that use everyday ingredients found in most home kitchens.

How we write a recipe

  • We study how the dish is made and note every ingredient, amount and step.
  • We write the recipe in our own words, with short and simple steps. AI tools help us draft it, and a person then checks the draft against our notes before it goes live.
  • Amounts from the source are used exactly as given.
  • When an amount is not stated, we suggest a normal home amount (quantity) for the number of servings, and check that it makes sense.
  • Tips, swaps (substitutes) and optional items go into the step notes.

Home ingredients only

We do not promote packaged, ready-made or branded products, and we never name brands. When a dish uses a ready-made item, such as a packaged snack mix or a spice blend, we use a simple home swap in its place, and prefer a swap the original cook suggests, if there is one.

No health claims

We do not say a dish is healthy, boosts immunity, cures anything or is “good for” any condition, even if the source does. Our recipes are about cooking and taste. Read our Disclaimer for more.

One recipe per dish

We avoid publishing the same dish twice. We add a second version only when it is truly different, such as a different cooking method or regional style, and its name says how.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, please contact us with the recipe name and what looks wrong. We check it against our sources and correct the recipe if needed.
